The African Union (AU) officially succeeded the Organization of African Unity (OAU) in July 2002 during the Durban Summit. Founded in 1963, the OAU focused primarily on decolonization and anti-apartheid struggle. The AU adopted a broader mandate emphasizing continental integration, peace and security, democratic governance, and development through its Agenda 2063 framework, with increased institutional capacity and intervention authority.
