In 1953, James Watson and Francis Crick proposed the double-helix model of DNA structure, based on X-ray diffraction data from Rosalind Franklin and Maurice Wilkins. Their model immediately suggested a mechanism for how DNA could replicate itself: the two strands separate, and each serves as a template for a new complementary strand.
