The ozone layer is a region in the Earth’s stratosphere containing a high concentration of ozone (O3) molecules. It acts as a shield, absorbing the majority of the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Prolonged exposure to UV rays can cause skin cancer, cataracts, and damage to ecosystems. It does not significantly block infrared, gamma, or radioactive rays.
