Hazrat Ali (RA) was attacked by the Kharijite assassin Abd al-Rahman ibn Muljim at the Masjid al-Kufa (Great Mosque of Kufa) in present-day Iraq. On 19th Ramadan 40 AH, while leading the Fajr (dawn) prayer, Ibn Muljim struck Ali’s head with a poisoned sword. Hazrat Ali succumbed to his injuries two days later on 21st Ramadan, attaining martyrdom at the age of approximately 63 years.
