Hazrat Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA), the second Rightly Guided Caliph, belonged to the Banu Adi clan of the Quraysh tribe. The Banu Adi held the important responsibility of arbitration in pre-Islamic Makkah, reflecting their status as a respected and influential clan. Umar’s (RA) father, Khattab bin Nufayl, was known for his strong character, and Umar (RA) inherited this trait, becoming one of the most formidable figures in Makkah before Islam. He was literate, a rare distinction at the time, and served as an ambassador for the Quraysh. His conversion to Islam in the 6th year of Prophethood was a turning point for the Muslim community. Prior to his conversion, he had been a fierce opponent of Islam, even planning to kill the Prophet (ﷺ). However, upon learning that his sister and brother-in-law had accepted Islam, he went to confront them, but was moved by the Qur’anic verses he heard and embraced Islam. His conversion was so significant that the Prophet (ﷺ) declared, “O Allah, strengthen Islam with Umar.” Umar’s (RA) acceptance of Islam brought strength and respect to the Muslim community, allowing Muslims to pray openly at the Kaaba for the first time. As caliph, his administrative genius transformed the Islamic state, expanding its territories, establishing the Hijri calendar, creating provincial governance structures, and ensuring justice for all citizens. The Banu Adi’s legacy is forever linked to this towering figure whose leadership defined Islamic governance for generations.
