The Jewish strongman Marhab fell to Hazrat Ali’s (RA) sword during the 629 CE siege of Khyber’s impregnable forts. According to “Maghazi” by al-Waqidi, Marhab wore layered armor and brandished a legendary sword when Ali (RA) engaged him near Fort Qamoos. Their poetic exchange before combat became proverbial in Arabic literature. Ali’s (RA) victory marked a turning point, leading to Khaybar’s surrender. Modern archaeological work at Khaybar has identified the probable location of this duel near the ancient Qamoos fortress ruins in Saudi Arabia’s volcanic highlands.
