The idea of digging the trench in the Battle of Khandaq was given by:

  1. Hazrat Umar (RA)
  2. Hazrat Salman Farsi (RA)
  3. Hazrat Ali (RA)
  4. Hazrat Sa'd (RA)

The idea of digging a trench to defend Madinah during the Battle of Khandaq (Battle of the Trench) was given by Hazrat Salman al-Farsi (RA). The battle took place in 5 AH when a coalition of Quraysh and allied tribes (the Confederates) marched against Madinah with a massive army. The Muslim forces, numbering around 3,000, could not hope to meet the enemy in open battle. The Prophet (ﷺ) convened a council to discuss strategy. Salman (RA), who had observed the Persian military tactic of digging defensive trenches, proposed that the Muslims dig a trench around the vulnerable northern approaches to Madinah. The Prophet (ﷺ) accepted this innovative suggestion. The trench was approximately 5 meters wide and 5 meters deep, stretching about 5 kilometers. The Muslims worked tirelessly, and the Prophet (ﷺ) participated alongside them. The trench effectively neutralized the cavalry of the coalition, forcing them into a prolonged siege. The tactic was unfamiliar to the Arabs and proved decisive. After a difficult 27-day siege involving hunger, cold, and constant anxiety, the coalition eventually withdrew due to discord and divine intervention (a powerful wind). The Battle of Khandaq was a turning point; the Muslims emerged with a decisive victory that solidified their position in Madinah. Salman’s (RA) suggestion demonstrated the value of expertise from diverse backgrounds and the Prophet’s (ﷺ) willingness to adopt practical strategies from non-Arab traditions. The battle is mentioned in the Qur’an as a test of faith. Salman (RA) was subsequently honored by the Prophet (ﷺ), who said, “Salman is from us, the Ahl al-Bayt.” His contribution highlights how the early Muslim community integrated knowledge from different cultures to overcome challenges.
