Khalid ibn al-Walid (R.A.), the “Sword of Allah,” was relieved of command in 638 CE (17 AH) due to Caliph Umar’s (R.A.) policy against prolonged military leadership. Despite remaining undefeated in 200+ battles (including Yarmouk and Qadisiyyah), Umar sought to prevent personality cults. Khalid accepted this humbly, dying a year later in 642 CE (21 AH). This decision is analyzed in Tabari’s “History of the Prophets and Kings” (Vol. 11).
