- The Dean of the College of Cardinals
- The Camerlengo
- The Vatican Secretary of State
- The Bishop of Rome
Traditionally, the official confirmation of a Pope’s death falls to the Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church. This cardinal holds a unique administrative role during the sede vacante (the vacancy of the papal see). Upon the Pope’s passing, the Camerlengo formally ascertains the death, typically by gently striking the Pope’s forehead three times with a silver hammer and calling his baptismal name. This ritualistic act, witnessed by other officials, serves as the official confirmation that initiates the process of electing a new Pope.
