Sheikh Fariduddin Masud Ganjshakar, commonly known as Baba Farid (circa 1188-1280 AD), is generally recognized as the earliest significant poet to write in what is now considered modern Punjabi. Although earlier examples of nascent Punjabi writing can be found, Baba Farid is universally acknowledged as the pioneering figure who cultivated the language for substantial literary works. His mystical Sufi verses, especially his “Shlokas” (two-line poems), are preserved within the Sikh holy scripture, the Guru Granth Sahib, and remain an enduring wellspring of creativity in Punjabi literary tradition.
