Kufa, Iraq, was founded and constructed on the orders of the second Caliph, Hazrat Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA), in 17 AH (638 CE). It was established as a garrison city (amsar) to house Arab Muslim troops participating in the conquest of Sassanian Persia. The city quickly evolved into a major administrative, military, and intellectual center, later serving as Hazrat Ali’s (RA) capital during his caliphate from 656-661 CE.
