  4. Yemen

Hazrat Salman al-Farsi (RA) was originally from Persia (modern-day Iran). His full name was Salman bin Abdullah, and he was born in the city of Isfahan. His remarkable journey to Islam is one of the most inspiring stories of spiritual seeking. He came from a noble Zoroastrian family and was entrusted with tending to sacred fires. However, he became disillusioned and began a spiritual quest that led him to Christianity. He traveled extensively, seeking truth, and was told that a prophet would appear in Arabia who would carry the seal of prophethood. He eventually made his way to Madinah, where he was sold into slavery. There, he encountered the Prophet (ﷺ) and recognized the signs of prophethood, including the seal between his shoulders. He accepted Islam but remained a slave until the Prophet (ﷺ) arranged for his freedom through a contract that was fulfilled when Salman (RA) planted 300 date palms. He participated in the Battle of Khandaq (Trench), where his suggestion to dig a trench around Madinah—a tactic unfamiliar to the Arabs—was instrumental in the Muslim victory. The Prophet (ﷺ) declared him a member of his household (Ahl al-Bayt), saying, “Salman is from us, the Ahl al-Bayt.” He later served as governor of Ctesiphon (Al-Mada’in) under Hazrat Umar (RA). His Persian origins did not prevent him from becoming one of the most learned and beloved companions. His journey symbolizes Islam’s universal message, transcending ethnic and national boundaries. He passed away in 32 AH, leaving a legacy as a seeker of truth whose dedication to faith overcame all worldly barriers.
