Hazrat Zubair bin Awwam (RA) was the nephew of Hazrat Safiyyah bint Abdul Muttalib (RA), the paternal aunt of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). Zubair’s (RA) mother was Safiyyah (RA), making him the cousin of the Prophet (ﷺ) and the brother of Hazrat Abdullah bin Zubair (RA) from a different mother. This noble lineage placed him within the Banu Asad clan of Quraysh. He accepted Islam at a very young age—reportedly between 8 and 12 years old—making him one of the earliest converts. His early conversion led to persecution; his uncle tied him in a mat and smoked him to force renunciation of Islam, but Zubair (RA) remained steadfast. He was known for his exceptional courage and was the first person to draw a sword in defense of Islam after being informed of the Prophet’s (ﷺ) intention to migrate to Madinah. He participated in all major battles, earning a reputation as a formidable warrior. His deep faith was matched by his knowledge; he was one of the most learned companions. The Prophet (ﷺ) described him as “every prophet has a disciple, and my disciple is Zubair.” He was also among the ten promised Paradise. Zubair (RA) was married to Asma bint Abu Bakr (RA), making him a son-in-law of Hazrat Abu Bakr (RA) and brother-in-law of Hazrat Aisha (RA). His relationship with Hazrat Safiyyah (RA)—his mother—and his close ties to the Prophet’s (ﷺ) household underscore his central role among the early Muslims. He was martyred in the Battle of Jamal in 36 AH.
