Natural gas is predominantly methane (CH₄), a hydrocarbon formed by anaerobic decomposition of organic matter. Methane’s low carbon-to-hydrogen ratio makes it a cleaner-burning fossil fuel than coal or oil, emitting less CO₂ per unit energy. It is transported via pipelines or liquefied (LNG) for global trade.
