The martyrdom of Hazrat Ali (RA) occurred on 21 Ramadan 40 AH (January 28, 661 CE) in Kufa, Iraq. While leading Fajr prayers at the Great Mosque of Kufa, he was struck by the poisoned sword of Abd-al-Rahman ibn Muljam, a Kharijite assassin. Ali (RA) survived for two days, during which he gave final instructions about justice and governance. His death marked the end of the Rashidun Caliphate’s golden age and is commemorated annually by Muslims worldwide, particularly during the Night of Qadr in Ramadan.
