According to reports, Pope Francis expressed his wish to be buried at the Basilica of Saint Mary Major in Rome. This breaks from the more traditional practice of Popes being buried in the Vatican grottoes beneath St. Peter’s Basilica. His desire stems from his deep devotion to the Virgin Mary, to whom that Basilica is dedicated. Furthermore, he has expressed that his tomb should be simple, bearing only the inscription “Franciscus”
