Hazrat Talha bin Ubaidullah (RA), one of the ten companions promised Paradise (Ashara Mubashara), belonged to the Banu Taym clan of the Quraysh tribe. This was the same clan as Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddiq (RA), making them close associates even before Islam. Talha (RA) was a successful merchant and a man of immense generosity, often referred to as “Talha al-Fayyad” (Talha the Generous) for his remarkable charity. He accepted Islam at a young age through the invitation of Hazrat Abu Bakr (RA). During the Battle of Uhud, he earned special distinction for his heroic defense of the Prophet (ﷺ). When the Muslims were routed, Talha (RA) shielded the Prophet (ﷺ) from arrows and sword blows, sustaining numerous wounds that left his hand partially paralyzed. The Prophet (ﷺ) praised him, saying, “Whoever wants to see a martyr walking on the face of the earth, let him look at Talha bin Ubaidullah.” Despite his wealth, he lived simply and gave generously, sometimes distributing entire caravans of goods to the poor. His generosity was such that he often emptied his treasury daily, trusting in Allah’s provision. His close relationship with the Banu Taym’s most prominent figure, Abu Bakr (RA), reinforced the bonds within the clan that supported the early Islamic movement. Talha (RA) later played a significant role in the early Muslim community, though his life ended tragically when he was martyred in the Battle of Jamal in 36 AH. His legacy as a companion, warrior, and philanthropist remains an inspiration, demonstrating how true generosity springs from faith.
