- Synonymous with “Qital” (fighting)
- A declaration of war against non-Muslims
- A comprehensive principle encompassing spiritual, moral, and physical struggle for righteousness
- A historical practice no longer relevant today
Jihad is a broad and comprehensive concept in Islam. While “qital” refers specifically to physical fighting, jihad encompasses all forms of striving for goodness. This includes the internal struggle against one’s base desires (greater jihad), striving to be a better person, speaking truth against tyranny, and, as a last resort, physical self-defense. It is a permanent and relevant spiritual concept.
