It was during the caliphate of Hazrat Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA), the second caliph, that the practice of Tarawih prayers in congregation was formally established and popularized. Witnessing scattered groups of people praying individually in the mosque, Hazrat Umar (RA) recognized the benefit of unity and collective worship, aligning with the spirit of Ramadan. He appointed Hazrat Ubayy ibn Ka’b (RA) and Hazrat Tamim al-Dari (RA) to lead the people in these congregational night prayers. This initiative brought order and a renewed sense of communal devotion to the observance of Ramadan nights, a practice that has continued and flourished throughout the Muslim world ever since.
